A quarter you cannot see, a history you can
No synagogue survives in Madrid, and that is what this route is about. We start at Plaza de Isabel II and read the medieval quarter in the street plan, in the documents and in what archaeology found beneath the Teatro Real and the Royal Palace: Plaza de Ramales and Plaza de Santiago, Calle del Arenal, Plaza de Oriente and the Armoury Square by the Almudena. We talk about coexistence, the 1492 expulsion and the Sephardim across the world, and finish in the present at the Centro Sefarad-Israel (Calle Mayor 69), with free entry.
Medieval Madrid is a debated subject — the exact limits of the quarter, even which quarter came first — and the route gives you the evidence and the debate, not a tidy answer.
