Further information

Madrid's walls talk. In Lavapiés they shout.

Lavapiés is the old working-class heart of Madrid and today its most multicultural barrio: Senegalese shops beside Indian restaurants, 17th-century corralas beside galleries and squats. That mix is exactly why street art works here. The walls are available, the neighbours are on board, and the art is never decorative — it argues about rent, borders, gentrification and who the city belongs to.

What we do

  • We meet at the Tirso de Molina statue, in the middle of Plaza de Tirso de Molina (metro Tirso de Molina, line 1), and walk the barrio's best murals and stencils: festival-commissioned facades that turned Lavapiés into an open-air museum, and pieces that went up overnight and may be gone next month.
  • We step into traditional courtyards where secret works hide behind the door of an ordinary building.
  • Along the way you get the artists' names, methods and rivalries — and the stories behind the pieces that made the neighbours furious.
  • We finish underground at the Banksy Museum, where more than 170 life-size reproductions bring together in a single space work scattered across Bristol, London, Bethlehem and New York.

Why Banksy closes the circle

Street art is the language; Banksy is its sharpest writer. The rats, the girl with the balloon, the kissing policemen: satire aimed at war, at authority, and at the same art market that now pays millions for him. Seeing it right after walking real streets is what makes the point land — a movement born illegal, at night, ended up defining 21st-century art.
