Philip II's monastery, from the inside
Philip II built himself a monastery, a palace, a basilica and a royal pantheon in a single block of granite at the foot of the Guadarrama mountains, and ruled an empire from a cell inside it. In two hours we visit the basilica, the Royal Pantheon beneath the high altar, the library with its frescoed vault and its books shelved spine inwards, and the small rooms where Philip II lived and died. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
